Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner
Selecting the right firewood can help maintain a cleaner chimney flue.
Choosing the Right Firewood
Hardwoods like oak, maple, and ash are excellent choices for cleaner burns. They are dense, burn hotter, and produce less smoke and creosote than softwoods.
Properly seasoned wood is critical. It should have been dried for at least six months with a moisture content below 20%. Unseasoned or green wood generates more creosote buildup in your chimney.
Storing Firewood
Keeping firewood dry and off the ground aids in maintaining its quality. Stack it in a location with good air circulation to allow the wood to dry thoroughly.
Cover the top of your firewood stack to protect it from rain and snow but keep the sides open for airflow. Proper storage prolongs the life of the wood and its efficiency when burned.
